Top FIFA Officials Arrested for Bribery and Curruption Charges

Seven officials of  FIFA, the governing body of international soccer, have been arrested by Swiss officials early Wednesday morning US time at their hotel in Zurich.

The arrests were made at the request of the US attorney for the Eastern District of New York, who wants them in connection with a bribery investigation.

Hours after the arrests, the Swiss Office of the Attorney General opened a second, unrelated investigation concerning the bidding process for the 2018 Russia World Cup and the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

According to VOX.com, In the first investigation, the US Dept. of Justice alleges that sports broadcast and marketing executives allegedly paid more than $150 million in bribes to FIFA officials to secure broadcast rights. Nine soccer officials and five sports executives are being indicted, and four have already pleaded guilty.

No one has been charged in the second investigation, but Swiss authorities are interviewing 10 FIFA executive committee members who served during the bidding process in 2010.
